Some days ago the Secretary of the Lord Mayor's
Fund for the Relief of Distress in China brought me
copies of some letters exchanged between the Mayor
of Hankow and the Hankow International Red Cross
Committee. These letters dealt with a number of very
mischievous allegations against the Hankow Committee,
which apparently emanated from, or were put about by,
a Mrs. Selwyn Clarke, the wife of the Principal Medical
Officer of Health at Hong Kong. It seemed to me that
considerable harm could be done to the Hankow Committee
and indeed to the Lord Mayor's Fund by the dissemination
of these malicious stories, and I therefore addressed
a telegram to Greenway at Hankow, repeating to Shanghai
and Hong Kong: I enclose a copy herein, together with
copies of Greenway's reply and of a telegram on the
G. E. J. Gent, Esq., D. S.0., 0.B. E., M.C.
